Apricot Trout

I keep and breed trout indian runners including blue trout and apricot trout (saxony) colours. They are pure bred and unrelated stock obtained as adults from experienced breeders.

"Trout" is a colour genotype that is wild colour (mallard) except for light phase. Blue trouts have one blue gene and apricot trouts have two blue genes. Trouts and apricots will breed true for colour, blue trouts will produce a percentage of trout/blue/apricot. For information on waterfowl standards and colour breeding please see the contacts page for a list of books.

On top of the Mendip's as we are we do not have a natural supply of water. The ducks enjoy trays of water and I use large plastic dog beds instead of paddling pools as they benefit from step in sides.

Ducklings are hatched indoors but are given as much space as possible to exercise and introduced as soon as possible to free range. Amongst other things they must have overhead protection from the predatory birds that we get here.

This page is a brief introduction to our ducks for further information or photographs please don't hesitate to enquire. Also see www.wfpoultry.co.uk for rouen & saxony.

Trout = no blue genes

Blue trout =one blue gene

Apricot trout = two blue genes

Crossing blue trouts with trout will give 50% blue & 50% trout.

Crossing blue with blue will give 50% blue, 25% apricot & 25% trout.

Crossing apricot trouts will give all apricot.

Young Trout Runners. The 2 sexes are now very clear to tell apart. The ducks have an orange beak and the drakes are yellow-green. Also note the distinct feather markings. These are the immature feathers that I think are beautiful. The mature feathers including a green head on the drake will start to come through in a few weeks time.

Apricot Trout.

This is a young pair with mature feathers beginning to grow through. He will have a pigeon blue head.
